Preheat oven to 375
Sift ( or stir) flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar into a bowl. Cut in butter until it resembles coarse meal. Blend in oats, currants and buttermilk until it just forms a sticky dough.
On a floured surface, knead dough gently 6 times. Roll or pat out to 3/4 " - 1" thickness. Cut in rounds with floured glass or cookie cutter, and re-roll scraps and cut more rounds. Or simply cut in triangles and no re-rolling will be needed.
Brush scones lightly with beaten egg. Optional- I sometimes sprinkle lightly with sugar after brushing with egg. Bake for 20 min or until golden.
I don't usually bother sifting, and have subbed raisins for currants. Make sure butter is COLD for this recipe.
