Slice onion into rings and cook slowly in butter until transparent.
Combine mix, egg, milk, and corn. Pour into buttered 8-inch square pan.
Add sour cream, salt, and half the cheese to onion. Mix well and spread evenly over batter. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes. Serve hot.
