In a large shallow baking dish, whisk together first 6 ingredients. Add bread slices and let soak for 10 minutes. Turn bread over. Cover dish with saran wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Preheat over to 300 degrees. Melt 5 tablespoons butter in heavy skillet, or griddle, over med low heat. Add half of the bread slices and cook until golden brown (about 4 minutes each side). Keep warm in oven while cooking remaining slices. Serve with powered sugar and syrup.
