Make mornings easier with our make-ahead Overnight Egg Nog French Toast Casserole with Streusel Topping. This easy to prepare recipe will feed a crowd on the busiest of holiday mornings with minimal cleanup. Sprinkle with a light dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle with warm maple syrup to serve. We recommend a platter of crispy bacon to accompany!
1. In a greased 9x13 casserole pan, spread the cubed bread evenly over the pan.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, egg nog, whole milk, brown sugar, salt, vanilla paste, cinnamon, and nutmeg until no lumps remain. Pour the custard over the bread. Cover and soak overnight in the refrigerator.
3. An hour before serving, remove the pan from the refrigerator and preheat the oven to 350°F.
4. While the oven preheats, prepare the streusel topping. In a small bowl, whisk together brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. With forks or a pastry cutter, integrate cold, cubed butter into the streusel mixture until it resembles a pebble-like crumb consistency. Sprinkle streusel on top of the soaked bread.
5. Bake for 45 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown. Serve hot out of the oven with a sprinkling of powdered sugar or a drizzle with warm maple syrup.
We believe a slightly stale loaf and an overnight soak duration are the keys to optimum results here, but if time is in short supply, fresh bread and a shorter soak (3 hours or so) will work perfectly fine.
