Combine melted butter with maple syrup in a small pan over med. Heat. Cook until just thick.
Pour mixture into 9X13 baking dish. Place slices of bread close together over mixture. Spoon apple topping onto bread slices. Place remaining slices of bread on top.
Combine eggs, milk, vanilla, spices and salt. Beat until blended. Pour mixture evenly over bread slices. Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sprinkle top with nutmeg and dot with butter. Bake uncovered for 40 to 45 min.
Serve topped with warm maple syrup.
• May also prepare homemade apples. Pare and slice 4 apples. Place in pan with 3T water, 2T honey and 1 cinnamon stick. Blend and cook for 5 to 10 min. Cool before using in above recipe.
