Suggest a better descriptionIn a big heavy pan combine sugar, water and syrup. Bring to a boil and boil exactly 3 minutes. Dump in peanuts and cook until peanuts and syrup are golden brown. When this point is reached, you can usually hear the peanuts pop.
Remove from stove immediately and add, in a hurry, previously measured butter, soda, and vanilla. It will foam like crazy at this point because of the soda.
Stir until well mixed and pour onto buttered 10 by 15-inch cookie sheet. When cool, crack into pieces.
After adding peanuts lower temperature some and cook until 300°-320° on a candy thermometer. When bubbles first surface, rimming edge of pan, start timing for the 3 minutes. The surface will become white and kind of foamy in appearance.
