In a mixing bowl, cream the butter sugar, eggs and vanilla. Add the buttermilk, flour, baking soda and salt; mix well. Stir in the pecans and cherries. Pour into a greased and floured 8x4 loaf pan. Bake at 350F for 65-75 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan.
