Place flour, the salt, and cream of tartar in the mixer bowl. Mix them together.
Place the dough hook onto your mixer. Set the power level to 2.
Add the hot water and oil to the flour. Note if making the play dough all one color, you can add the food color to the water now. Allow the dough to knead for 5-6 minutes. Add more flour if you need the playdough to be softer.
If you want separate colors, wait to add the food coloring until after the play dough forms. You can then knead in the colors as you wish.
This recipe makes the equivalent of 12 commercial Play Doh ® containers. You may cut the recipe in half. Store the play dough in sealed containers to keep it from becoming dry. If the play dough does get dry, just put it back in the mixer and knead again with a small amount of water.
