Heat oven to 350. Grease 9" springform pan and wrap with foil. For fruit, put sugar and cinnamon in pan. Shake to distribute evenly scatter butter. Arrange plum slices around edges and in center, fill in.
For cake, sift flour, powder, soda, salt; set aside. Beat sugar and butter in large bowl til light. Add egg, mix til fluffy. Add buttermilk and vanilla. Mix well, don't worry if it looks curdled. Add sifted dry ingredients. Mix until smooth. Spread carefully over plums to edge. Put pan on baking sheet. Bake until well browned and a toothpick inserted into center comes out clean - 60-80 minutes. Let cake cool 5-10 minutes. Remove ring, invert cake onto serving plate and carefully lift bottom of pan from cake. Let cool 1 hour before serving. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream flavored with cinnamon and sugar.
