Suggest a better descriptionHeat oven to 425. Place butter in microwave and melt.
Brush well seasoned 10 inch cast iron skillet liberally with some butter. Stir thyme into remaining butter.
Peel potatoes and cut in half crosswise. Slice into 18 inch slices. Working quickly and starting in the center of skillet, overlap slices in concentric circles to create 1 layer. Sprinkle with scant 1/4 tsp salt and drizzle with about 2 tsp butter mixture. Tope with another layer of potatoes and repeat salt and butter. Press each layer down. Continue till all potatoes are in pan.
Coat a sheet of foil with baking spray and cover pan. Bake 30 min covered with foil and 30 min uncovered. Let stand 10 min, then run spatula around edge and under bottom. Turn out onto a cutting board and serve.
