This delightfully homey dessert is perfect for the holidays, using up all your scraps of dried bread. Serve it warm with caramel sauce drizzled over the top and vanilla icecream or whipped cream for a perfect ending to a winter meal.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
Divide bread cubes between two large baking dishes. Whisk together whole milk, eggs, salt, cinnamon, heavy cream, 1 cup brown sugar, 3 teaspoons vanilla, and 2 teaspoons ground anise or fennel seed. Pour mixture over bread crumbs and let soak for 1 hour or overnight under refrigeration.
Bake uncovered for 30 minutes.
Serve warm or cold with caramel sauce, pumpkin butter, and/or whipped topping.
