A rich and heavy cake.
Add baking soda to boiling water and pour over the dates. Let stand while mixing the batter. Cream sugar and butter, add egg, then vanilla. Sift dry ingredients and gradually add to batter while mixing. Add nuts, then date mixture, and mix well. Bake in 9 X 13 greased pan at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until done.
Frosting:
Combine 5 T. brown sugar, 5 T. light cream and 2 T. butter in a saucepan and bring to boil. Boil 3 minutes. Spread on cake without beating. Sprinkle with coconut or nuts or both.
