Oma's recipe with lots of raisins.
Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand 10min. Heat milk to warm and add butter and shortening. Stir until melted. Beat eggs. Add warmed mixture to eggs slowly. In a small bowl mix raisins with 1/2 cup of the flour. This prevents them from sinking to the bottom of the bread. In a large bowl put 5 cups flour. Add sugar and salt. Make a well in the centre and all the liquids. Srir well and add raisins. Add as much of the last cup of flour as needed. Knead well. Cover and let rise 2 hours in a warm place. Divide dough into 4 pieces and shape into round loaves. Place on cookie sheets. Cover with towel and let rise 45 min. Heat oven to 325 degrees and bake loaves for one hour. Five minutes before taking them out of the oven, brush tops with beaten egg. This gives them a shiny look. Continue to bake 5 additional minutes. Makes 4 large loaves or 6 smaller ones.
Sounds complicated but it's not. And it is so worth it!
