This red velvet cake is different than most of the recipes I've found because it has a frosting that is white. It isn't buttercream or cream cheese.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour three 9 inch round cake pans. Cream sugar and Crisco shortening. Add eggs. Combine salt and flour. Gradually add the flour/salt mixture and buttermilk to the sugar, shortening and eggs. Beat for one minute. Stir in red food coloring. In a small cup, stir the baking soda into the vinegar. It will foam. Stir this into the cake batter, combining well. Pour batter into the prepared cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool briefly on wire rack and then remove from pans. Finish cooling completely on wire racks. While cooling, make Snow White Frosting.
To make Snow White Frosting, mix together in medium saucepan: 2 cups whole milk, pinch salt and 1/2 cup flour. Cook and stir over medium heat, stirring or whisking constantly until very thick. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
In mixing bowl, combine 2 cups Crisco Shortening, 2 cups granulated sugar and 2 teaspoons vanilla. Beat on high until very fluffy. Add the cooled milk and flour mixture and beat on high again until no longer gritty and quite fluffy. Frost cooled cake.
