In a large bowl stir together the shortening and corn syrup. Mix until combined well.
Mix in salt and vanilla Extract. If you want a White Fondant skip the food coloring, otherwise mix in food coloring. Use enough to get a bold color as the confectioners' sugar will lighten the color slightly (not as much as you think, but slightly).
Gradually mix in the confectioners' sugar. Sift the sugar in as you go. This takes a while. Start with a large fork and move to a wooden spoon when it becomes less sticky.
Eventually you will be able to knead it, keep adding confectioners' sugar until it becomes smooth and not sticky.
You can store the fondant in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
To use, roll on a clean surface that has been dusted with confectioners' sugar until it is 1/8 inch thick or thinner if you can. Roll it onto a card board tube and unroll it on a frosted and chilled cake. Center the cake under the Fondant. Smooth the fondant around the cake and cut off the extra, using a pizza cutter works well.
You can use the extra by knead it back together and roll it out again to make bows, strips, etc.
