Splutter Mustard seed, curry leaves and asafoetida.
Next add onions and saute for 2 minutes. Add vegetable (if using) and cook for 5- 7 minutes until they are 3/4 cooked.
Now add the tamarind extract, Sambar powder, turmeric powder and salt. Boil on low-medium heat for 10 minutes.
Add the mashed dal and add water to bring the sauce to desired consistency. Cook for another 10 minutes and turn off the heat.
