Heat oven to 350(F). Grease 2 quart casserole dish.
Cut potatoes into 4 cups worth of thin slices.
Melt 3 Tbsp butter over medium heat. Cook onion in butter for 2 min stirring occasionally until tender. Stir in flour, salt and pepper. Cook stirring constantly until smooth and bubbly; remove from heat.
Stir in milk. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 min.
Spread potatoes in casserole dish. Pour sauce over potatoes. Dot with 1 Tbsp of butter.
Cover and bake 30 minutes. Uncover and 1 hour 10 minutes longer or until potatoes tender. Let stand 5-10 min before serving.
