Pretzel rods dipped in melted caramels, then a variety of chips. Quite yummy!
With a sharp knife, cut pretzel rods in half; set aside. In a large saucepan over low heat, melt caramels with milk. In a large shallow bowl, combine the chips, toffee bits and nuts.
Pour caramel mixture into a 2-cup glass measuring cup. Dip the cut end of each pretzel piece two-thirds of the way into caramel mixture (reheat in microwave if it become too thick for dipping). Allow excess caramel to drip off, then roll pretzels in the chip mixture. Place on waxed paper until set. Store in an airtight container.
Notes: Try to find a package of pretzel rods with as few unbroken pieces as possible. You can use any combination of chips you like (we used English toffee bits, chocolate minis, a few regular size butterscotch chips and some butterscotch minis); nuts are optional, and any kind would work. The amount of chips and toffee bits called for in this recipe would probably make more of these treats. We had about half of the mixture left over. We couldn't dip the rods as far into the caramel mixture as called for; perhaps a one-cup measure would work better (i.e., it would be a little deeper). Also, caramels now come in 11-oz packages, so it takes more than one package.
