In a large soup pot over medium heat, warm the olive oil until shimmering. Add the onion and salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are tender and turning translucent; about 7-10 minutes. Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring occasionally, until fragrant; about 30 seconds.
Add the tomatoes, vegetable broth, beans and basil and stir to combine. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 30 minutes, reducing the heat as necessary to maintain a gentle simmer, and stirring occasionally.
Turn off the heat. Add the sugar, a few pinches of black pepper. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth, or transfer to a blender; place a kitchen towel over the hole in the lid and blend carefully. Taste and add more salt, pepper or sugar if needed.
