A delicious twist on Grandma's pineapple upside-down cake.
Arrange pear halves in a greased 9" round cake pan, cut-side down and stem ends toward center; set aside. Combine flour, baking soda, salt and spices in a large bowl; set aside.
Combine buttermilk, shortening, sugar, egg and molasses in a blender. Blend until smooth, about 2 minutes. Pour over flour mixture and mix thoroughly. Pour batter over pears; sprinkle with nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes. Immediately loosen cake from edges of pan and turn onto a serving plate.
Serve warm with whipped topping.
