Beat together margarine and sugar until light and fluffy; blend in egg yolk and vanilla. Add flour and salt; mix well. Spread dough onto bottom of greased 15 x 10 jelly roll pan. Bake at 350 for 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Melt shortening in 2 qt saucepan; add candies. Cook over very low heat, stirring constantly with back of spoon to break up.
