In a large stockpot or saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and sauté about 2 minutes. Add chicken, thyme, cardamom, cumin and sage and cook until chicken is cooked through, about 4 to 5 minutes. Add tomatoes, beans, chicken broth, salt and pepper. Stir together, cover pan and reduce heat to low. Simmer 45 minutes.
Serve 1-1/2 cup servings sprinkled with 1-1/4 Tbsp Parmesan cheese.
