Suggest a better descriptionSpoon or pour flour into sauce pan. Add sugar and salt. Stir well to blend. Add milk stirring until smooth. (Use a whisk). Cook over medium heat, stirring until mixture thickens.Remove from heat. Add egg yolks. (Add some of hot mixture to yolks first). Return to heat, bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla and butter. Cover with wax paper. Cool.
Pour into cooled graham wafer pie crust.
Cover with meringue made from beaten eggs white, 1/4 cup sugar, pinch of cream of tartar. ( cream of tartar is optional but makes meringue fluffier)
Bake in oven at 350 deg F until meringue is golden brown.
Variations;
Coconut cream pie: add 3/4 cup coconut to above to vanilla and butter
Banana cream pie: prepare vanilla cream pie filling. Add 2 sliced bananas to cooled filling
Chocolate cream pie: prepare above increasing sugar to 1 cup. Add 2 to 3 squares (2 to 3 oz) unsweetened chocolate. Cut into small pieces to flour-sugar mixture in saucepan.
