Combine and gently stir together the water, sugar and yeast.
Allow to rest for 15 minutes. This is called the first rising and is used to test the yeast to see if it is active.
Beat in egg and oil.
Add in half of flour a little at a time beating after each addition so that it is smooth.
Allow to rise for 30 minutes.
Add in rest of flour and salt.
Knead until smooth and elastic.
Coat bottom of bowl with oil.
Place ball of dough in bowl then turn up side down so that all sides are coated with oil.
Cover with clean dish towel.
Allow to rise for 45 minutes to one hour in a warm, dark place.
Oil baking sheet(s) and sprinkle with cornmeal.
Divide dough in two then form into loaves.
Let rise for 30 minutes on baking sheet(s).
Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees.
Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds.
Bake for 20-30 minutes depending upon the accuracy of your oven. Rotate baking sheet half way through baking time.
Allow to cool on baking rack for 10 minutes.
