Sauté the onion and garlic in the bottom of the instant pot with butter or oil of choice. Once the garlic is browned and the onions are translucent add remaining ingredients (EXCEPT optional ingredient and kale*). Place lid on instant pot and set for 12 minutes on manual (also called “HIGH”). Perform quick release (or allow to slow release if you’re not serving right away). Add cream if using.
