Suggest a better descriptionPrepare 1 tbsp of yeast in 1/2 cup of warm water with 1 tsp sugar added. Heat 2 1/2 cups of milk to lukewarm. In a large bowl, measure about 2 cups of flour and 1 tsp of salt. Add 1/2 cup of butter and 1/2 cup of shortening. Begin mixing, adding 1 more cup of flour as you mix (do this part by hand) and making a crumbly dough. Add warmed milk and yeast mixture, add 1 more cup of flour and continue to mix with your hands.
Add 2 - 2 1/2 more cups of flour and mix & knead with mixer. Dough will be sticky but smooth. The trick is to knead it lots!
Cover and let rise. Punch down, let it rest for a few minutes, and form into balls. Place on greased pans and let rise again.
Bake at 425 - 450 for 10 - 12 minutes.
