Place apples in a lightly greased 8" x 8" square baking dish; add water. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Using a pastry cutter, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; sprinkle over apples. Bake at 350F for 40 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve warm over vanilla ice cream, if desired.
