Bavarian Apple Pot Roast

Ingredients

2 tablespoons Shortening

3 pounds Chuck Roast

1 teaspoon Salt

3/4 teaspoon Ginger

5 whole cloves

1 Bay leaf

1/4 teaspoon Black pepper

1 cup Apple Juice

1/2 cup Dry red wine

4 Golden Delicious Apples Cored, Cut in quarters

1 onion sliced


Directions

In a large skillet or Dutch oven heat shortening. Add roast and brown on all sides. In a medium bowl, combine salt, pepper, ginger, cloves bay leaf, apple juice and wine. Pour over meat in pan. Bring mixture to a boil. Lower heat and simmer, covered 2 hours. Place apple and onion slices around meat. Simmer, covered 30 minutes more or until meat is tender. At serving time, remove meat to a platter and surround w/ apple and onion slices.
