Beat shortening, vanilla, and extract with an electtric mixer on medium speed for 30 seconds. Slowly add half of the powdered sugar, beating well. Add 2 tablespoons milk. Gradually beat in remaining powdered sugar and enough remaining milk to make of piping consistency.
Divide frosting into three or four portions. Stir in desired food coloring. Pipe decorations on cookies using a decorating bag and small writing and star tips. Makes 2 cups.
