1. Cook sugar, milk, and butter in a sauce pan, stirring constantly until it reaches 240 F (115 C) or soft ball on the candy thermometer.
2. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Allow to cool without stirring until the temperature reaches 110 F (43 C).
3. Beat until thick and creamy. Pour into buttered pan and cut into squares when cool.
