Lightly grease deep square cake tin, lined with paper.
Place water and dates in pan. Bring to boil, remove from heat, add bi-carb. Mix and cool slightly.
Beat butter, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Fold in sifted flours. pour date mixture in and mix well.
Pour mixture into tin and bake in moderate oven for 45 mins or until cooked.
To make sauce, Combine ingredients in saucepan over low heat. Stir until warm.
Pour sauce over pudding and serve with cream and/or ice cream.
