Small children aren't really ready for real sushi. But they enjoy being included in the idea of attractive snacks. Here's an idea to start your imagination moving.
Cut cake in 1 inch by 2 inch rectangles (about bite size). Cut fruit rollups in long strips. Place a fish on each piece and secure with a strip of fruit. Dipping sauce can be thinned out jam or almost any suitible liquid. I used strawberry jam with some pineapple juice.
You can substitute freely in this recipe.
Instead of cake, try sweetened sticky rice or fiber cereal with marshmallow creme. (Like krisp rice bars)
Instead of gummi fish (or other critters) try firm pieces of fruit such as peach, apricot, or apple.
Instead of fruit rollups, try colored soy paper or rice paper dipped in colored fruit juice.
Most important thing is to let your imagination roam and have fun. You can always eat your mistakes.
There were a hit with 3 - 5 year olds. Adults thought they were cute also. I had a lot of fun putting them together.
