In large stockpot brown sausage and onions until no longer pink and onions are translucent.
Add remaining ingredients, except pasta and bring to boil. Add pasta and cook until desired firmness (time varies, depending on type of pasta chosen).
Serve topped with grated parmesan, if desired.
