Mix ingredients in pot and bring to boil.
Remove from heat.
Dumplings:
Sift together dry ingredients.
Cut in shortening. Mixture should resemble coars crumbs.
Add milk slowly until mixture is moist.
On lightly floured surface, roll 18 x 12 rectangle.
Cut into six 6" squares.
Place apple on each square.
Sprinkle generously with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and dot with butter.
Bring corners to center and pinch edges together.
Place 1" apart in ungreased 11 x 17 x 1.5" pan.
Pour syrup over dumplings.
Bake at 375 degrees for 35 min or until apples are tender.
