Preheat oven to 350°. In medium bowl, pour boiling water over dates, salt and soda; let stand. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Gradually add flour and date mixture. Beat well. Add vanilla and nuts. Fill six greased cans one half full with batter. Bake for one hour. Cool for 10 minutes on wire rack. Remove from cans.
Yield: 6 loaves
