A sugar cookie that has been doused with chocolate !
To make the cookies, in a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar with an electric mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla.
In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, ground chocolate, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, scraping down the sides of the bowl and the beaters with a rubber spatula as needed. Cover and chill the dough for 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 325 deg F.
On a lightly floured surface, roll one-quarter of the dough to a thickness of 1/4-inch. (Leave the remaining dough in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.) With cookie cutters, cut the dough into deisred shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheets, about 2 inches apart. Repeat with the remaining dough.
Bake for 5 to 7 minutes, until no indentation remains in a cookie when pressed lightly. Cool for 2 minutes on the cookie sheet, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
To make the glaze, melt the butter over low heat in a small, heavy saucepan. Remove from the heat and add the ground chocolate and 2 tablespoons of the water, whisking continually until the mixture is smooth. Add the vanilla. Gradually add the confectioners' sugar, stirring with a wire whisk until smooth. Add additional water, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, until the glaze reaches the desired consistency. Drizzle or spread on cooled cookies.
