This recipe is adapted from one my husband's grandma clipped from Sunset magazine in the 60's or 70's. The original had you baking this in a coffee can with an elaborately-prepared foil collar so the finished product resembled a mushroom. :-P
Cook mushrooms in butter over med. heat, stirring occasionally, until all liquid evaporates.
Add milk, sugar, and seasonings. Heat to lukewarm.
In lg. bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/3 c. lukewarm water. Add mushroom mixture to yeast mixture.
Beat in 1 1/2 c. flour and egg. Gradually beat in 1 1/4- 1 1/2 c. more flour to make a heavy, stiff batter that is too sticky to knead.
Cover and let rise in a warm place until almost doubled in size, 45 min. - 1 hr.
Meanwhile, grease a 1 pound loaf pan.
When dough has risen, stir down, then spoon into loaf pan. Let rise in warm place, uncovered, 30-45 minutes.
Bake in 350 oven until well-browned, about 50 min. Immediately remove from pan and place on wire rack to cool.
Serve warm or cooled.
