Place pears in a large pan, large enough for them to fit snuggly, add the rice syrup and star anise, and cover in boiling water.
Bring back to boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
Allow the pears to cool, then remove them from the syrup.
Boil the syrup until it reduces to 1/2 cup.
Drizzle the thickened syrup over the pears and serve.
