Suggest a better description1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 8-inch cake pans.
2. Cream the shortening and sugar. Add the eggs, one at at time. Mix to combine. Stir in the vanilla.
3. Make a paste of the cocoa and food coloring. Add to the creamed mixture; mix to combine.
4. Combine the flour and the salt in a small bowl. Combine the baking soda and vinegar in another small bowl.
5. Alternate adding the flour mixture and the buttermilk into the creamed mixture in three additions, starting and ending with the flour. Fold in the baking soda mixture. Divide between the prepared pans.
6. Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Let the cake cool in the pans for 10 minutes, flip out onto a cooling rack and cool completely.
7. MAKE THE FROSTING: Cook the flour and milk together into a thick roux. Cool completely. Beat together the sugar, vanilla, and butter. Add the cooled roux to the creamed mixture. Beat into a creamy, frosting consistency.
8. Cut each of the cake layers in half horizontally. Spread the flosting on top of each layer. End at the top of the cake. No frosting on the sides.
