Yummy Polish Favorite!!
Put cabbage in boiling water and when leaves soften, remove as many as needed. Drain.
Combine uncooked ground beef, rice, onion, salt and pepper, egg, onions, and spices. Mix well.
Put equal amounts in each cabbage leaf, fold over, and fasten with toothpick.
Put the rolls in roaster. Combine sauce, sugar, and water and then pour this over the rolls. I cook mine in the oven and also put cabbage leaves on the bottom of the roaster with the rolls on top (optional as you desire). Season sauce to taste.
Betty's adaptations:
I use mom's basic recipes, but once again I increase the amounts, using about 2-3 pounds of ground beef and corresponding amounts of increased rice and spices. I put extra cabbage on the bottom like mom does, but then I also slice some extra cabbage to put over and around the rolls. I use either tomato juice or V-8 juice (usually one large bottle because the sauce is so yummy) and add the brown sugar and spices to this. I then cook this all afternoon in my Nesco roaster.
