Traditionally a 'ti punch (as in petit, pronounced "tee") is served deconstructed so that everyone can make their drink as they like.
To prepare simple syrup: Bring water and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan. Reduce the heat and simmer until slightly reduced and thickened, 6 to 8 minutes. Let cool to room temperature before using.
To serve: Fill 4 rocks glasses with ice cubes. Add 2 teaspoons of the simple syrup, 3 tablespoons rum and 1 teaspoon lime juice to each glass. Stir vigorously. Add more simple syrup and/or lime juice to taste. Garnish with a slice of lime.
