Over medium heat, heat sugar, syrup and 1/4 cup water. Stir in margarine. Set thermometer, cook, stirring frequently to 300F (20 min). Remove from heat, reserve 1/3 c. almonds. Stir remaining almonds in, immediately pour onto well greased sheet. Cool. Melt chocolate and 1 teaspoon shortening together. Remove candy in one piece. Spread with chocolate, sprinkle with almonds. Let set 1 hour. Break into pieces.
