A Brazilian pastel is a street food or appetizer that is kind of like a deep fried empanada that is made with a thinner dough, closer to the thickness of a wonton wrapper. The traditional pastel has a savory feeling, such as beef, chicken, cheese, hear of palms, etc, but you can easily have a sweet version of it. Be creative!
Mix all in a bowl, make sure you combined well. Transfer the dough to a surface dusted with flour and knead the dough for around 10 mins, until the dough is smooth and no stick in your fingers.
Wrap the dough in plastic film and let it rest at least for 15 mins to 30 mins.
Roll out the dough as thinly as you can (aim for 1-2 mm thick).
You can cut in circle or rectangles shapes, I usually cut in medium to large size around 8 inches, add the filling on the center and have a small bowl of water on the side, simply dip your finger in some water and use it to moisten the edges of the dough. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half circle. Press the edges of the pastel tightly closed using a fork, to seal the filling in.
Fry the pastéis until golden and crispy, turning once, being careful not to over-crowd your cooking oil. Frying time will vary depending on how hot your oil is, but it should take from around 1 - 3 minutes a side.
Transfer the pasteis to a paper towel-lined plate and serve as soon as possible!
