Beat shortening, brown sugar, milk and vanilla in a large bowl with mixer until well blended. Beat in egg. Combine flour, salt and baking soda in a separate bowl and mix into the wet mixture until just blended. Stir in chocolate chips.
Form golf ball sized balls and place onto baking sheet.
Bake 8-10 minutes for chewy cookies or 11-13 minutes for crisp cookies.
Cool on wire rack.
