Grease a 220mm diameter by 90mm high oven proof dish.
Pre-heat the oven to moderate - 200 degrees C, 180 degrees C fan forced.
Cream the sugar and the butter.
Add the egg and mix well.
Add the vanilla and mix well.
Sift the flour and the cocoa together, and add alternately with the milk.
Put mixture into the prepared dish.
Mix cocoa and sugar together, and sprinkle on top.
Gently pour boiling water over the back of a spoon, onto top of pudding, trying to cover the whole area evenly.
Bake in moderate oven 35 - 40 minutes.
There is plenty of sauce unless it is overcooked, then the sauce dries up. Perfect with ice cream and/or custard.
