Suggest a better descriptionRemove as many dead skin cells as possible by washing your feet. You’ll need a clean “work surface” before getting down to the nitty gritty so either soak or just wash your feet.
Use skin softening soap and a washrag to clean your feet. Make sure you get between toes and around the ankle area in addition to the tops and bottoms of your feet.
Use a clean towel to pat dry. After you’ve dried your feet take a close look at them to see which areas may need the most “work.”
2
Fill your bathtub or pedicure tub with hot water. Of course you don’t want scalding water but you want the temperature to be hot enough to loosen dead skin cells and allow the Epsom salt to do its work.
Make sure you fill the tub high enough to completely cover your feet. Ankle high water should do the job.
Consider using some of the pedicure tub controls during the process. If you have an at-home pedicure tub turn on the vibration or heat for added benefits.
3
Add Epsom salt to the water once both feet are firmly planted in the tub. Although there’s really no specific measurement you need, a handful or one or two cups of salt should suffice.
Swish the salt around the tub so it is evenly distributed. Make sure you have enough salt along the bottom of the tub so your feet can sit on top of the salt.
Soak feet in the salt water until the water has cooled. By then the salt will have worked its way into the dead skin cells, loosening them up and providing an opportunity for easy removal.
4
Remove feet from salt water and wrap them in a clean towel. Pat feet dry instead of rubbing so that the salt can continue to work its way into your skin.
Allow feet to air dry for five to 10 additional minutes before exfoliating. You may even see dead skin cells falling off your feet after you’ve patted them dry. Resist the urge to begin exfoliating with a pumice stone or file until they’ve dried and rested for a few minutes.
5
Peel away dead skin from your feet using a clean pumice stone or foot file. Now you will see the power of the Epsom salt soak pay off as you easily strip your feet of rough edges and callouses.
Begin with the balls of your feet as they will most likely be the most resistant area. Use a swift, dragging motion across the feet to efficiently remove skin cells.
If you see any bleeding or experience pain, stop exfoliating as you have most likely gone too far.
Don’t forget to exfoliate around your toes and the backs of your heels where dead skin may hide but not be as apparent.
6
Soak exfoliated feet in warm water and then pat dry with a towel. You should now see baby smooth feet ready for summer sandals.
Repeat the Epsom salt process if you don’t reach the desired result. For feet that haven’t been groomed in quite some time, you may need a second pass.
Slather feet in moisturizing lotion and allow them to air dry. If you live in a dry climate, consider wearing socks after you moisturize to give the lotion more time to soak into your skin.
