Cut the butter into pieces and place in mixer with paddle attachment. Start mixing on low and gradually increase speed. Scrape sides of the bowl often. When the butter is light and fluffy, gradually add the sugar and mix on low speed until it is combined. Add the milk and vanilla until it all appears moist.
You may now turn up the speed and beat frosting until it is light and fluffy.
Variations: Frosting may be flavored with chocolate, fruit purees, liquors or other extracts.
