Cookies which are not overly sweat, but will soak up all the milk in your glass.
Sift the flour once, measure, add baking powder, soda, salt and nutmeg and sift again.
In a separate bowl, cream shortening, add sugar gradually- cream well.
Add eggs and vanilla and beat thoroughly.
Add flour, alternately with sour cream, in small amounts, mixing well after each addition.
Chill until dough is firm enough to roll out- overnight, if possible.
Roll 1/3 inch thick on lightly floured board.
Cut with a floured cutters.
Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 375° for 12 to 15 minutes.
Be sure to chill dough. Chill cutting board. Divide dough into 1/3's, roll 1/3 at a time. Thick is better than thin! Keep unrolled dough in fridge. Gather unused dough into ball, put in freezer until firm and roll again. Cookies stored in sealed container for a week enhances flavor! Frosting cookies distracts the flavor. To decorate, use colored sugar before baking.
