This recipe comes from one of my favorite cook books, Enjoy Chinese Cuisine.
Heat oil in wok. Brown on all sides. 10 minutes. Add garlic and fry (1/2 min). Drain off excess fat. Add hoisin sauce, salt and chicken stock. Cover, bring to a boil and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated (about 5 min). Reduce temp if liquid is cooking off too fast. Add some water & cornstarch solution to thicken if desired. Turn heat off. Add green onions.
