Knead for 8-10 minutes on a floured surface until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased mixing bowl and turn once to coat the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until doubled.
Dissolve yeast and 1/2 teaspoon sugar in warm water in a large mixing basin; set aside until bubbles appear on the surface. Combine the remaining 3 tablespoons sugar, salt, and 3 cups flour in a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the yeast and oil; pour into the flour mixture and whisk until smooth. 1/2 cup at a time, stir in the remaining flour to produce a soft dough.

Knead the dough. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured board and divide in half. Form each one into a loaf. Place the batter in two greased 9x5-inch loaf pans. Allow 1 to 1-1/2 hours for the dough to double in size.
Bake at 375° for 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and hollow when tapped or has achieved an internal temperature of 200°. Cool on wire racks after removing from pans.
